A gruesome video circulating on social media is a reminder of the darkest days of brutality by Mexican drug cartels.
Friends pay tribute to murdered journalist Lourdes Maldonado, who was shot and killed as she arrived in her car in Tijuana, Mexico, on January 27, 2022.
In the first month of 2022, two journalists were shot dead in Tijuana in two separate attacks within a week.

Jalisco state attorney general Luis Méndez Ruiz said Tuesday that the men seen in the video “could be the five people they are looking for.
“This video and the information published on social media platforms are now part of the investigation,” Mendez said. The clothing worn by the men in the video also resembles previously released photos of them alive but tied up.
The chances that the video is real increased Wednesday as investigators searched a series of brick and concrete ranch buildings where the brutal scenes are believed to have been filmed. They found bloodstains on the floor and shoes scattered about.

“This suggests that five boys were at the ranch,” prosecutors said in a statement.
The video has the words “Puro MZ” written above the image, an apparent reference to El Mayo Zambada, leader of a faction of the Sinaloa drug cartel.
However, it was unclear who was responsible for the video. Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro said it was clear drug cartels were involved in the crime and called on federal prosecutors to take over the case. “What we are seeing here is clearly organized crime related activity,” Alfaro wrote on his social media account.
He said the killings and the July killings of four police officers and two civilians in which a drug cartel launched a series of coordinated bombings on the streets of western Mexico threaten the country’s stability.

He claimed it was an act.
“These are irrational, violent and direct attacks on the stability of Jalisco that require a response from the (federal) government,” Alfaro wrote.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador gave no indication that the government might intervene anytime soon.
When the president was asked about the video during his regular press conference Wednesday, he jokingly pretended he hadn’t heard the question.

If confirmed, this video, which shows someone throwing a brick at a teenage boy to hit the victim off-camera, could be the drug that the kidnapping victims were forced to kill, one by one. It will bring back memories of the most horrifying incidents of cartel brutality.

In 2010, a Mexican cartel kidnapped a man from a passenger bus and forced him into a fight to the death with a sledgehammer.
The tragedy came to light in 2011 when authorities discovered 48 secret graves containing 193 bodies in the northern border state of Tamaulipas.
Most had their skulls crushed with sledgehammers, and many were immigrants from Central America.
It was later revealed that the victims were dragged from passing buses by the former Zetas drug cartel, forced to fight each other with hammers, and killed if they refused to work for the cartel.
