Hunter Biden sues Rudy Giuliani
Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has filed a lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani and his former lawyer Robert Costello, accusing them of violating his digital privacy by hacking and disseminating data from his laptop and hard drive.
The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday in a federal court in California, claims that Giuliani and Costello spent years “hacking into, tampering with, manipulating, copying, disseminating, and generally obsessing over data that they were given that was taken or stolen from” Hunter Biden’s devices¹²³.
The lawsuit alleges that the defendants violated the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and two California laws that protect the privacy and security of personal data. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, costs, and injunctions to prevent further use or disclosure of Hunter Biden’s data¹²³.
The lawsuit stems from the controversy surrounding a laptop and a hard drive that Hunter Biden allegedly left at a Delaware computer repair shop in 2019. The shop owner, John Paul Mac Isaac, claimed that he made a copy of the data and gave it to Giuliani’s associate, Costello, who then shared it with Giuliani and the New York Post⁴⁵⁶.
The New York Post published a series of articles in October 2020, shortly before the presidential election, that purported to show evidence of Hunter Biden’s involvement in corruption and illegal activities in Ukraine and China, as well as his personal and drug problems. The articles also claimed to implicate Joe Biden in his son’s dealings, which the Biden campaign denied⁴⁵⁶.
Giuliani, who was then President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, tried to use the laptop and hard drive data to damage Joe Biden’s reputation and chances of winning the election. He also claimed that the data proved that Hunter Biden was a national security threat and that the FBI and the Justice Department were covering up the scandal⁴⁵⁶.
Hunter Biden has admitted that he struggled with addiction and that he made some poor decisions in his life, but he has denied any wrongdoing or illegality in his business ventures. He has also questioned the authenticity and origin of the laptop and hard drive data, suggesting that they could be part of a foreign interference or a smear campaign⁴⁵⁶.
Hunter Biden is also suing Mac Isaac, the computer repair shop owner, for allegedly breaching his contract and violating his privacy by copying and disclosing his data without his consent. Mac Isaac has countersued Hunter Biden for defamation, claiming that he was falsely accused of being a hacker and a thief⁴⁵⁶.
